David de Gea, the Spanish goalkeeper, has made a return to Manchester United following speculation about his future at the Premier League side. After a 12-year stint at Old Trafford, de Gea’s contract expired at the end of June, leading to failed negotiations for a new deal. Towards the end of last season, the 32-year-old was close to signing a new contract on reduced terms, but United withdrew their offer. They later returned with an even lower salary offer, which de Gea refused to sign.
Since then, de Gea has been a free agent, while his replacement Andre Onana struggled in his initial games for United. Onana made errors in the Champions League defeat against Galatasaray and conceded a soft goal against Brentford on Saturday. Fortunately, Scott McTominay secured a late win for the team.
Amid the pressure surrounding Onana’s performance, de Gea stirred up speculation by revealing on Instagram that he had returned to the city. However, according to the Daily Mail, his visit is only temporary as he makes arrangements for his former residence in Hale, where he lived as United’s top-choice goalkeeper.
In addition to this, de Gea was seen at Manchester United Women’s 1-1 draw with PSG in the first-leg of their Champions League second round encounter. During the summer, there were reports that de Gea had turned down a move to Inter Milan and was also linked to Bayern Munich. Last month, there were even claims that the former Spain international was considering retirement.
Nevertheless, de Gea appears to be relaxed about his future and is currently enjoying time with his family after marrying his long-term partner Edurne Garcia in the summer. While he is not actively seeking a new club at the moment, the situation could change in the coming year.
