Scotland manager Steve Clarke said Andy Robertson had “hurt his shoulder” against Spain, and would “go back” to Liverpool as a result.
With the scores at 0-0 at the Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla in Seville, Robertson was injured when Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon landed on the left-sided defender.
After being assessed he was taken off, and as he left the pitch he had his shirt fashioned into an improvised sling for his right arm.
Robertson, 29, was replaced by Nathan Patterson, Everton’s 21-year-old right-back, and goals from Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet won the match for the home side.
Speaking after the match in Spain, Scotland boss Clarke said: “Andy has hurt his shoulder. He will go back to his club now.”
Liverpool are missing Nathan Jones and Diogo Jota through suspension after their red cards against Tottenham, while Jurgen Klopp is also without Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, and Conor Bradley with injury.
Their first game after the international break is the Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield on Saturday, October 21.
After eight Premier League games they sit fourth on 17 points as they look to regain a top-four finish in order to secure UEFA Champions League football after missing out last season.
A draw for Scotland would have been enough to ensure they qualified from Group A for Euro 2024.
However, the 2-0 defeat meant that while they remain top, their lead over Spain is three points, with the chasing team having a game in hand to play Norway on Sunday.
Looking ahead to the remaining fixtures, Clarke said: “It’s 100% in our hands. We’ve done a lot of work to get 15 points from six games.
“If Norway don’t get anything from Spain, we qualify on Sunday night. But we don’t qualify because of that, we qualify from that because of the work we’ve done to get 15 points. If Norway win, we go into November with a realistic chance of topping the group.”
