The Frasier revival is now streaming on Paramount+, bringing Kelsey Grammer’s neurotic psychiatrist to a whole new generation of fans. But don’t expect the same old Seattle snob. For one, the character has mellowed a little with age—and he has returned to Boston, the setting of Cheers, where the character first appeared on our screens.
This means that while the title of the show and leading man are the same, almost everything else about this series is brand new, including the cast. Primary characters now include Frasier’s firefighter son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), Freddy’s roommate Eve (Jess Salgueiro), and coworkers Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Olivia (Toks Olagundoye).
Several performers are notably absent from the revival, primarily Frasier’s father, Martin Crane, who was played by John Mahoney in the original sitcom. Frasier and Martin’s chalk-and-cheese relationship served as a basis for a lot of long-term character growth, with the two men learning to reconnect after years of distance. Sadly, Mahoney passed away in 2018. The new series pays homage to the late actor by naming Frasier’s new favorite hangout bar Mahoney’s.

Another key character in the original was Frasier’s brother Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce. “For a while we were going to try to bring back the whole cast, the whole legacy cast,” Grammer told People back in 2022, before explaining that Pierce had opted to not return. “David basically decided he wasn’t really interested in repeating the performance of Niles,” he said. “In a very funny way, it just took us to a new place, which was what we originally wanted to do anyway, which was a Fraser third act… It’s an entirely new life for him.”
With Niles out of the picture, it made little sense for Jane Cleeves to return as Daphne Moon, who originally entered the show as a home carer for Martin before eventually falling in love with and marrying Niles. While both Daphne and Niles remain off-screen, their now-adult son David does appear in the show, played by Anders Keith.

However, two fan-favorite cast members will be reprising their roles in the new series. Bebe Neuwirth, who first appeared as Frasier’s wife Lilith in Cheers and later appeared as his ex and co-parent to Freddy in Frasier, will make a guest appearance. And Peri Gilpin will have a cameo as Roz Doyle, Frasier’s close friend and former radio producer with whom he worked on his show in Seattle.
