Three police members have been apprehended after allegedly soliciting a bribe in exchange for releasing a woman they had arrested in Pretoria.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested the three police members and a businessman on Saturday after the complainant reported that they had solicited a R580 000 bribe from her.
The suspects include two members of the Silverton K9 unit and a member of the crime intelligence unit.
According to a police statement, the three officials went to the complainant’s residence to enquire about her passport and alleged fraudulent stamps.
They arrested and questioned her.
The woman reported that the three hinted during the questioning that the case would be dropped if money exchanged hands.
“They had asked for R1 million, compounded with threats of her son also being arrested. The complainant gave in, and R580 000 was agreed to, resulting in the complainant being released,” police said in the statement.
The four will appear on corruption charges in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court next week.
