The Bills have been nothing if not inconsistent in their first seven games of 2023.
At times, Sean McDermott’s side looks like gangbusters, a squad capable of overpowering even the stoutest of opposition defenses. This was the team that put Las Vegas, Washington and Miami to the sword, cruising to victories without as much as lifting out of second gear.
But other times, things are strained. Buffalo’s defense — once considered one of the best in all of football — has looked pedestrian, especially in defeats to the Jets, Jaguars and Patriots.
As such, the Bills enter Week 8 on the same number of losses (three) as they had in the whole of 2022.
A reprieve could be on the way, however; for when Buffalo faces off against the Buccaneers on “Thursday Night Football”, the Bills will finally get a chance to put things right.
NFL WEEK 8 PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread
Tampa Bay hasn’t been much better on the year, seeing a 3-1 start drift into the abyss after back-to-back losses to the Lions and Falcons, respectively. Baker Mayfield’s foray into the pocket has been middling. As has the production of Rachaad White, whose output has fallen off since the latter days of 2022.
Perhaps the Bills can get back on track this time around. The spotlight of prime-time football is verdant and lively. Allen knows that better than anyone else.

Bills 10, Buccaneers 0
8:55 p.m.: Huge return by Deonte Harty, who jostles back and forth before carving the Bucs’ special teams unit for 25 yards. You need a lil something special to get things going sometimes.

8:40 p.m.: Chase McClaughin sees his 50-yard effort stray wide. Tampa leaves its first foray into Buffalo territory with nothing to show for it.
8:36 p.m.: Tampa a major benefactor after Taylor Rapp interferes with Cade Otton in his attempt to snag Mayfield’s pass. The Bucs are into Buffalo territory.
8:30 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Buffalo opens the scoring as Tyler Bass squeezes his 37-yard effort into the uprights.
Bills 3, Buccaneers 0
8:28 p.m.: Welcome to the party, Gabe Davis! The Bills’ hulking No. 2 receiver takes Buffalo on the cusp of the red zone with a pair of solid snags along the right sideline. Allen has four completions thus far. None have gone to Stefon Diggs.
8:27 p.m.: Shakir does it again! Evades his marker and races down the sideline after reeling in a lofted Allen effort. Then, he frolicked down the meadow for 20, barreling over a would-be tackler in the process. Allen getting a wide array of targets involved thus far.

8:25 p.m.: Josh Allen connects with Khalil Shakir to start proceedings for Buffalo. An optimistic 13-yard gain.
8:20 p.m.: Bucs drive falters just as it gets going. Buffalo will start its first possession of the game on the shadow of its own end zone.
8:18 p.m.: Tampa moves the chains on third down courtesy of a Mayfield throw to Trey Palmer. 15 yard-gain to keep the drive alive.
8:17 p.m.: First play of the game is a run through the tackles for Rachaad White. Decent six-yard gain there for Tampa’s lead RB.
8:15 p.m.: The kick is off and we’re live from Highmark Stadium! Buccaneers will start the drive at their own 25!
8:00 p.m.: Expelliarmus! Mike Evans getting in the Halloween mood with his Harry Potter-inspired leg ink.

7:50 p.m.: Buffalo’s offense has struggled immensely in the first half since that momentous win over Miami in Week 4. Can they kickstart things this time around against a Tampa defense left reeling from Vea’s absence.
7:30 p.m.: The shackles are off of Von Miller. Buffalo’s star linebacker took just six snaps last week, still getting back into rhythm after suffering a torn ACL last season. But he’ll be right back in the mix this week; he told Thursday Night Football’s Kaylee Hartung that he’s not on a pitch count today vs. the Bucs.

7:15 p.m.: The man who Norman is supplanting on the active roster today? None other than Kaiir Elam, the Bills’ first-round pick from last year. Can’t reckon that will go over too well with Bills Mafia.
#Bills CB Kaiir Elam, their first-round pick from last year, is a healthy inactive for tonight’s game against the Buccaneers. That’s the fifth time this season it’s happened to him.
Josh Norman is active instead, having been called up from the practice squad. https://t.co/91vdvpBHkQ
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) October 26, 2023
7:00 p.m.: One big-name expected to play today: Ed Oliver. The Bills DT was ruled questionable ahead of today’s game after missing Buffalo’s Week 7 loss to New England with a toe injury. But he’s fit (enough) and firing for today’s clash against Tampa Bay. With four sacks in six games, you’d best believe Oliver will have Mayfield’s attention.
— Dan Fetes (@danfetes) October 26, 2023
6:40 p.m.: Big blow for the Bucs, as Vita Vea is ruled out of tonight’s game with a groin injury. Huge loss for Tampa; Vea is one of the best defensive tackles in all of football. Look for Greg Gaines to try to replicate his impact. Easier said than done though. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Buffalo go to the well early and often with James Cook.
6:15 p.m.: Baker Mayfield out on the field for warmups. His left leg is cloaked by a bulky sleeve. Will be interesting to see just how much that limits his fluidity. Either way, Mayfield entered into Thursday’s game under questionable billing. However, it looks like he’s still committed to getting himself out on the field.
6:00 p.m.: Looks like the Bills are calling in the cavalry to face off against the Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield. Enter Josh Norman and Andy Isabella:
The #Bills elevated CB Josh Norman and WR Andy Isabella from the practice squad to the active roster for tonight’s game against the #Buccaneers. Norman will make his season debut and first game for Buffalo since 2020.
