How Blink-182’s New Album Compares To Fall Out Boy, Jonas Brothers, Soundgarden Reunions

Topline

The first album released by Blink-182’s original members in more than a decade will top the Billboard 200 albums chart when it’s released later this week, the publication said Monday, an impressive debut among reunion albums that have had mixed success for powerhouse bands like the Eagles, Jonas Brothers and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Key Facts

One More Time, released October 20, is the first Blink-182 album for the original lineup in over a decade, and its release comes after 14 years of break ups, tour reunions and replacing band members.

The album was pushed to No. 1 with 125,000 equivalent album units, a music industry measurement that combines streaming, song downloads and traditional album sales to rank best-performing releases.

One More Time is the band’s third album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Two of the album’s songs—Edging and One More Time—ranked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, which ranks the most-played songs on alt-rock radio stations, and were at No. 61 and 62, respectively, on the Hot 100 list of the top-performing songs overall, marking Blink-182’s highest-charting Hot 100 songs since 2004.

Key Background

Blink-182 hit the peak of its mainstream success in the years following the 1999 release of Enema of the State and went on indefinite hiatus in 2005. After drummer Travis Barker was involved in a near-fatal plane crash in 2008, the band reunited and toured until the end of 2014, when guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge left the group. Alkaline Trio vocalist Matt Skiba replaced DeLonge in the group for years and Blink-182 released a new album with him called California in 2016. DeLonge re-joined the band in 2022 and the original group released Edging, a single on the new album One More Time, the year before the full album debuted. Blink -182 started the World Tour 2023/2024, also called the Hard Rock Tour, in May. It will end in 2024 after 93 shows in Europe, Australia, Latin and North America.

Big Number

$85.3 million. That’s how much Blink-182’s reunion tour grossed in its North American leg this year, Billboard reported. It sold 564,000 tickets.

Reunion Albums: A Medium Of Mixed Success

Long Road Out of Eden by the Eagles: The band produced one of the most successful reunion albums of all time with its 2007 release, which went platinum seven times in the United States with more than 7 million certified unit sales. The album, the band’s first since 1979, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, won two Grammys and was one of the best-selling albums of the year.

Save Rock and Roll by Fall Out Boy: The release was a commercial and critical comeback after a years-long hiatus for Fall Out Boy. The album went platinum with more than 1 million certified units in the United States and 300,000 in the United Kingdom, and hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Happiness Begins by the Jonas Brothers: The 2019 release was the band’s first studio album since 2009 and marked a return of the group after its breakup in 2013. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 414,000 album-equivalent units and featured the single Sucker, the Jonas Brothers’ first to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

King Animal by Soundgarden: The band reunited after 13 years apart in 2010 and put out the last album released with frontman Chris Cornell in 2012. The record debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart with 83,000 album sales and reached No. 1 one on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart.

Move Like This by The Cars: This 2011 release came after 24 years without new music. The album was made without original bassist Benjamin Orr, who died of cancer in 2000, and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200.

No Cities to Love by Sleater-Kinney: A decade-long hiatus ended in this 2015 release. Billboard, Cosmopolitan, Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone were among the publications to name No Cities to Love among the best albums of 2015; it peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200.

Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 by The Smashing Pumpkins: The band’s first full-length album with its original lineup to be released in almost two decades was its fourth worst-performing release to date—Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 debuted at No. 54 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2018.

m b v by My Bloody Valentine: The rock band waited 22 years between studio album releases before m b v debuted to mixed reception in 2013. The record peaked at No. 55 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart.

What To Watch For

Yellowcard, which saw success from its comeback tour last year, plans to release new music in 2024. The band broke up in 2016 and reunited in 2022 before embarking on a 20th anniversary tour of its successful Ocean Avenue record.
