Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to push Israeli officials to engage in “humanitarian pauses” in the invasion of the Gaza Strip, a senior administration official said Thursday, as the top U.S. diplomat embarked on a trip to the Middle East. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive planning around the trip. President Biden said Wednesday that he favors such a pause, but not a cease-fire — the first time he has publicly voiced the position that senior administration officials took last week. But concerns from within Biden’s party have risen. In a rare moment of public criticism Thursday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a close ally of Biden, said Israel’s current strategy in Gaza “is causing an unacceptable level” of civilian deaths and “does not appear likely” to permanently end the threat from Hamas.
