Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan have both starred in Karate Kid films, but they’ve never appeared on screen together—until now. Sony just announced a new Karate Kid film that will combine the franchise’s various storylines, piggy-backing on the success of Cobra Kai’s five seasons on Netflix. Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso, while Chan will once again star as Mr. Han from 2010’s Karate Kid remake.. Sure, he trained Jaden Smith in that movie… but who cares! Now, he’s friends with Daniel, and all is right in the world.
In a new video released by Sony, the two Karate Kid stars revealed that they’re looking for a new lead. Before I could think about all the potential kid actors I would want to see in the role, Jackie Chan announced that Sony will actually hold global casting calls for the next “Karate Kid.” Does this mean… I could be the next Karate Kid? I got my first black belt when I was just nine years old, and I would have shattered skulls to be the next Karate Kid. Do you think 28 is too old to be a Karate Kid?
Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) is set to direct the film, according to Deadline, with Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) penning the script. “The global search for the star of our new film starts right now,” Macchio says in the video. “So, let’s wax on, wax off, everybody!” The video links to KarateKidCasting.com, where Sony specifies that they’re looking for someone between 15 and 17 years old. Rats! It may be too late for me, but I’ll be cheering you on, next Karate Kid!
