According to a recent survey by NOIPolls, over 49 % of Nigerians believe the country is unsafe. Nigeria’s peacefulness deteriorated by three ranks, ranking it 20th from the bottom out of 163 countries.

Despite not making it to the ten safest countries in the world in 2023, Nigeria still has many safe places to live. For example, the capital city of Abuja is relatively safe, as are some of the major cities in the south of the country, such as Lagos and Port Harcourt.

According to the Global Peace Index, here are the ten safest countries in the world in 2023.

Iceland
Iceland has topped the GPI for many years, and for good reason. It has a very low crime rate, a strong sense of community, and a high standard of living. Iceland is also a very peaceful country, its demilitarized status and commitment to peace make it a beacon of safety in a turbulent world.

Denmark
Denmark is another very safe country with a strong social safety net. It has a low crime rate, a well-funded law enforcement system, and a high standard of living. Denmark is also a very tolerant and inclusive society. The country’s commitment to progressive policies, robust healthcare, and education systems, along with its peaceful international stance, contribute to its high GPI ranking.

Ireland
Ireland has made significant progress in its safety and security in recent years. It has a low crime rate, a well-trained and equipped police force, and a strong sense of community. Ireland is also a very welcoming country with a strong tradition of hospitality. Its peacekeeping efforts in international conflicts also reflect a commitment to global harmony.

New  Zealand

New Zealand is a relatively small country with a low population density. This helps to reduce crime and violence. This Pacific island nation also has a strong sense of community, a strong rule of law, a transparent government, and a high standard of living. The country is also committed to environmental protection, contributing to its peacefulness.

Austria
Austria is a well-governed country with a strong sense of law and order. It has a low crime rate, a well-trained and equipped police force, and a fair and effective criminal justice system. Austria is also a very prosperous country with a high standard of living. Its central location in Europe also contributes to regional stability.

Slovenia has a small population, it offers a tranquil environment. Slovenia’s commitment to international peace initiatives and low crime rates also contributes to its high GPI ranking

Japan
Japan, known for its technological innovation and cultural heritage, is also a symbol of safety. Low crime rates, a strong rule of law, and advanced disaster preparedness measures make Japan a secure nation. Its peaceful foreign policy adds to its reputation.

Switzerland
Switzerland has a stable political environment, low crime rates, and a strong economy make Switzerland a haven for residents and visitors alike. famous for its neutrality and breathtaking Alpine landscapes, it rounds out the top 10 safest countries.
