14-Day Strike Notice Issued to FG – NLC, TUC

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) have jointly issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate action on the non-implementation of agreements reached in October 2023.

This decision underscores the unions’ frustration over the government’s apparent disregard for the worsening economic conditions and the hardships faced by Nigerians nationwide.

Why TUC,NLC issued the warning

The crux of the matter lies in the government’s failure to implement the promises made in an agreement on October 2, 2023. The NLC and TUC have pointed out that the agreed terms were aimed at mitigating the severe socio-economic impacts resulting from policy decisions endorsed by the IMF/World Bank.

These policies, which included a significant hike in the price of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) and the devaluation of the naira, have, as predicted by the unions, led to dire economic repercussions for the general populace and workers across Nigeria.

Despite ongoing efforts to maintain industrial peace, the leaders of the NLC and TUC have expressed their dismay at the government’s indifference towards the escalating hardship in the country.

The unions’ statement, released on Thursday, February 8, 2024, emphasizes the urgent need for the Federal Government to fulfill its obligations under the October agreement. They argue that the government’s inaction not only exacerbates the suffering of Nigerian citizens but also neglects the welfare and dignity of workers nationwide.

The NLC and TUC have made it clear that they have been left with no option but to issue this strike notice. They highlight the necessity of this move as a means to defend the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and citizens against the backdrop of the government’s persistent failure to address the economic challenges facing the country.

The implications of the strike

Should the Federal Government fail to meet the demands of the NLC and TUC within the given 14-day period, the proposed nationwide strike could have significant implications. It is a call to action for the government to take immediate steps to alleviate the economic burdens faced by its citizens and to honor its commitments to the welfare of Nigerian workers.
