29 Yoruba Nation Expendables Bracing Up to Be Heroes in Court

The rag-tag band of the Yoruba Nation agitators began their trial in the absence of their leader at an Ibadan court on Wednesday.

So far, the Ibadan police command have mopped up 29 of the rebels following their attempts to over-run the state secretariat, and plant the Oodua Nation flag there last week.

In their handcuffs, a number of them said they had no regret storming the state headquarters because their leader told them they had to do it.

According to the special adviser to Oyo Gov Seyi Makinde, the group’s leader, Modupe Onitiri-Abiola, has gone on the lam now. The widow of the late businessman MKO Abiola, never came across as someone who had the gut for armed struggles.

But a former militant leader of the Yoruba Nation agitation Sunday Adeyemo confirmed in a video Onitiri-Abiola spearheaded the invasion.

The 29 suspects faced a seven-count charge on treasonable felony, unlawful society, illegal possession of firearm, going armed and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Investigative Police Officer Bakare Rasaq said the offenses run contrary to, and it’s punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
