7 Richest Black People in the World in 2023
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In recent years, the list of the world’s wealthiest individuals has seen an increasing inclusion of the richest black people, marking a significant shift in the global economic landscape. As of 2023, this diverse group of entrepreneurs and business magnates has not only accumulated substantial wealth but also carved out influential niches in various sectors.

These individuals have transcended barriers from technology to media and philanthropy, demonstrating remarkable understanding and resilience. Several Black billionaires worldwide have seen a notable increase in their wealth, leading to changes in the rankings of the world’s richest Black billionaires. This growth comes after a challenging 2022. Key figures experiencing significant wealth gains include Hip Hop’s first billionaire, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, who added $1.23 billion to his net worth.

This article aims to shine a light on the richest black people delving into their unique paths to success and the profound impact of their enterprises. Their stories are not just about financial achievement, they are testaments to the power of ambition, perseverance, and visionary leadership.

Aliko Dangote

Leading the ranks of the richest black people in the world is Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian business magnate with an impressive net worth of $19.9 billion. Dangote, acclaimed as Africa’s richest man, has built his fortune on a foundation of diverse business ventures, including Dangote Fertilizer, a major player in the agricultural sector, and Dangote Cement Plc, the largest cement manufacturer in Africa. His business interests also extend to Dangote Sugar and Nascon Allied Industries.

Throughout the year, Dangote’s wealth has experienced a substantial increase, evidenced by the $1.23 billion rise in his net worth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His expansive operations, spanning ten African countries, are a testament to his entrepreneurial prowess. Additionally, the Dangote Oil Refinery, currently under development, is poised to become one of the world’s largest, showcasing Dangote’s strategic foresight even in the face of global challenges like climate change.

Robert F Smith

Robert F. Smith stands as America’s wealthiest Black billionaire and the second richest black person in the world, with a net worth of $12 billion. He is the mastermind behind Vista Equity Partners, a trailblazing private equity firm he founded in 2000, specializing in software investments. Under Smith’s leadership, Vista has burgeoned into a powerhouse with more than $50 billion in assets, yielding an impressive 22% annual return since inception.

The bulk of Smith’s wealth is anchored in his stake in this Texas-based firm. Demonstrating a remarkable growth trajectory, his net worth has recently increased by $50 million, as per the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. Smith’s journey to success is marked by persistence and innovation, exemplified by his early career at Bell Labs and significant contributions at Goodyear Tire and Kraft Foods. His commitment to philanthropy is equally notable, as evidenced by his 2019 pledge to eliminate the student debt of the entire graduating class at Morehouse College.

Mike Adenuga

Mike Adenuga, with a net worth of $6.1 billion as of 2023, stands among the richest black people globally. He is the founder and chairman of Globacom, Nigeria’s third-largest mobile network, boasting over 55 million subscribers. His business empire extends beyond telecommunications; Adenuga also helms a lucrative oil exploration company in Nigeria’s Niger Delta.

His journey to wealth is a tale of perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit; as a student in New York, he moonlighted as a taxi driver while pursuing an MBA. By age 26, Adenuga had already earned his first million through selling lace and soft drinks. His success in both the telecom and oil sectors exemplifies a remarkable blend of vision and determination, securing him a notable position among global business leaders.

David Steward

David Steward, an emblem of success among the richest black people, has a net worth of $6 billion in 2023, positioning him as the fourth wealthiest Black individual globally. He is the founder and CEO of World Wide Technology, Inc., which has evolved from humble beginnings to a prominent technology solutions provider with clients like Citi, Verizon, and the U.S. government. Steward’s journey from witnessing his car’s repossession to owning a company of such magnitude is a story of remarkable perseverance.

His commitment to giving back is evident in his $1.3 million donation to establish the David and Thelma Steward Institute for Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. This trajectory of growth, from a net worth of $5.01 billion at the beginning of the year to $5.76 billion, underscores Steward’s impactful presence in the American business landscape.

Patrice Motsepe

Patrice Motsepe, a prominent figure among the richest black people, is a South African billionaire with a net worth of $2.7 billion as of 2023. He made history in 2008 as the first Black African billionaire and currently holds the title of the richest Black person in Southern Africa. Motsepe is the founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, a company he transformed from low-yielding mines into a profitable mining enterprise. His business interests extend beyond mining; he has stakes in Sanlam, a major financial services firm listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Additionally, Motsepe owns the Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and serves as the president of the Confederation of African Football, showcasing his diverse involvement in both business and sports.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey, renowned as “The Queen of Talk,” is not only one of the most famous Black American women but also the richest black woman in the world with a net worth of $2.5 billion as of 2023. She is the founder and chairwoman of Harpo Productions, a powerhouse in producing television shows, films, and digital media.

Oprah’s journey began in TV journalism, from where she evolved her popular talk show into a vast media empire, including the OWN network. Her strategic reinvestment of profits from her talk show and successful films like “The Color Purple,” “Beloved,” and “Selma” into the media industry has been key to her financial growth and influence, marking her as a significant figure in the entertainment world.

Strive Mayisiwa

Strive Masiyiwa, a key figure among the richest black people, has established himself as Zimbabwe’s wealthiest man with a net worth of $2.1 billion as of 2023. He is renowned for founding Econet Wireless Zimbabwe in 1998, overcoming significant government opposition to launch what is now the country’s largest telecom services provider.

His financial success largely stems from a 52.85-percent stake in Econet Zimbabwe and a 30-percent stake in EcoCash Holdings, a group dedicated to leveraging digital and financial technologies for economic empowerment. Masiyiwa also has investments in fiber optic and fintech companies across Africa. Alongside his wife Tsitsi, he founded the HigherLife Foundation, supporting orphaned and low-income children in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Burundi, and Lesotho, demonstrating his commitment to social impact and philanthropy.
