A Promising, Confusing Update About ‘X-Men 97’ Season 2
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

X-Men 97

Marvel

X-Men 97 has ended its first season as one of the best pieces of Marvel media in history. Not just subjectively, as that’s what I personally believe, but numerically, as it has the highest combined critic and audience scores of any Marvel movie or show, ever.

While season 2 is greenlit and was probably always inevitable, things are…a bit weird. And it appears there’s both good news, and strange news.

Series creator Beau DeMayo, despite being fired ahead of the release of season 1 of X-Men 97, has already written a good amount of season 2. Here’s what he said about the situation:

“I did write a lot of Season 2,” DeMayo said in a tweet. “However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show.”

That led Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum to comment to EW on the situation, crediting DeMayo with the plan to bring Apocalypse into the show for season 2, which was teased in the finale.

“We are honoring Beau’s ideas for the second season,” Winterbaum said, but confirmed the third season would indeed have a new head writer. He also credits direction and animation for how well X-Men 97 went. Supposedly season 2 is already recorded and in the editing stage. It’s unclear if they’re using DeMayo’s exact scripts or just “honoring” his general ideas, but the short timeline here between his firing and now editing season 2 already seems like they are probably using his work.

X-Men 97

Disney

The whole situation remains deeply strange. DeMayo was abruptly fired right before season 1 aired, and despite the success, even if they’re using his scripts or ideas in the future, he will have nothing further to do with the show, other than making tweets about it, which he’s done this whole season.

It’s an odd situation because not only is either party talking about the reason for his firing, but even in a leak-filled Hollywood, we have heard nothing substantial about why this happened. Writers on his previous show, The Witcher, seem to have taken issue with his behavior in the past, but if there was a specific incident here with X-Men 97, we don’t know what it is. There has been speculation this may have something to do with DeMayo having an OnlyFans account that Disney didn’t like, but that remains pure guesswork without any viable sourcing. But you also can’t say “Disney hire him back!!” without any context of what happened here.

But here, Winterbaum seems to be generally speaking respectfully about DeMayo and his ideas. I think he wants to reassure fans that they can expect a similar level of quality despite DeMayo not being involved with most aspects of season 2. But if it’s generally his story and some scripts and they are retaining the same directing and animation team, that it has every chance of being fantastic. After that, with a totally new head writer, that’s unclear.

I am sure Disney wants to ride this out as long as possible, given that this is a reception they have not seen to a Marvel offering in years, even if it’s entirely outside the MCU. It’s also sparked calls to revive other old animated series like Spider-Man, but whether this kind of magic can be repeated is unknown. It doesn’t seem likely.
