Blade Runner is a long running franchise with two films having been launched and this time a sequel series titled ‘Blade Runner 2099’ is currently in the development stage with Michelle Yeoh being cast as the lead.

It looks like everything is going the ‘Amazon way’ as the platform is working on some impeccable franchise that have earned repute through the years. This includes the likes of the Blade Runner franchise that first began in 1982 when Harrison Ford starred as the lead in ‘Blade Runner’. This was followed by a sequel ‘Blade Runner 2049’ in the year 2017 that starred Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks in pivotal roles. The second film in this franchise was planned back in the 90s but licensing issues stalled the development of the sequel back then. However, as both the films made a mark, it is now time for a sequel series in this franchise, which will be available to stream on Prime Video, according to a Variety report.

Michelle Yeoh has already won hearts and minds of cinephiles across the world with her impeccable performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Now, it is to be seen how well she is able to keep up expectations in this upcoming Blade Runner sequel series, which is expected to have far more action than the other films.
Blade Runner sequel series: Expected plot, showrunners, release date
Amazon has kept the plot of the upcoming Blade Runner series under wraps at the moment and nothing in clear about the intensity and making of the series. However, it can be expected that the neo-noir elements, seen in the released films is also present in this sequel series.
At the moment Silka Luisa is spearheading the show, serving as the showrunner and executive producer. According to Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun) will direct the first two episodes while the director of the initial Blade Runner Film, Riddley Scott, will be an executive producer in the sequel series. The release date of the series is not known yet, but it is expected that Amazon will be bringing an update on that soon enough.
