New employment numbers show more jobs were filled in November 2023 than in the month before.
Stats NZ data on Wednesday showed an increase of 0.1 percent – 1324 jobs – across all industries in November compared to October, taking the total number of jobs filled to 2.39 million.
Across the primary industries 412 additional roles were filled, an increase of 0.4 percent.
Stats NZ said employment numbers in service industries remained flat – a small increase of only 118 jobs – and there was a 0.2 percent increase in jobs filled in goods-producing industries.
Compared with November the year before, the largest changes in the number of filled jobs were in healthcare and social assistance – up 5.5 percent (14,430 jobs); public administration and safety – up 7.0 percent (10,786 jobs); transport, postal, and warehousing – up 7.6 percent (7077 jobs); accommodation and food services – up 4.1 percent (6389 jobs); education and training – up 3.1 percent (6331 jobs).
By region, the largest increases on previous year were in Auckland – up 3.8 percent (30,176 jobs); Bay of Plenty – up 3.2 percent (4655 jobs); Canterbury – up 2.5 percent (7846 jobs); Waikato – up 2.1 percent (4808 jobs); and Wellington – up 1.4 percent (3620 jobs).
Men experienced the biggest increase, rising 2.4 percent (27,847 jobs) compared to 1.7 percent (20,241 jobs) for women.
The age group which saw the biggest increase was 35-39 years, which rose by 9.3 percent (23,171 jobs).
The only age group to decrease was 15-19 years, which was down 8 percent (12,528 jobs).
Actual gross earnings on an accrual basis in November 2023 month were $15.3 billion, compared with $14.2 billion for the November 2022 month.
