Key Background

Holiday weekends tend to be deadlier than regular weekends in America when it comes to mass shootings. Last summer, over July 4 weekend, the country experienced a number of mass shootings, including one that killed six people and injured 31 people during a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburbs. Earlier this summer, over Memorial Day weekend, 14 people were killed and at least another 58 people were injured over the Friday-to-Monday stint, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The year prior, 13 people died and 77 people were injured in mass shootings over Memorial Day weekend.
