Netflix’s successful recent history of sports-based documentaries has continued with Beckham becoming a breakout hit on the service. The chronicle of the famed footballer’s public and private life has done extremely well on the charts, sitting at #1 for over a week, but now, you guessed it, it’s been dethroned.

I am happy to report that my favorite Netflix asset (soon to be former asset) Mike Flanagan has had his new series, The Fall of the House of Usher, debut at #1. He’s the man behind The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and Midnight Club, where three out of four of those were some of my favorite series across all of Netflix. Hill House may actually be my actual favorite on the whole service.

The Fall of the House of Usher is great. I binged the entire thing in one day, and I was extremely happy to see a return to form after Midnight Club turned out to be something of a miss. The show is an extremely clever adaptation of the works of Edgar Allen Poe, threaded into the story of a family who runs a pharmaceutical giant running into tragedy after tragedy.

Top 10

Netflix

The eight episode series, which is reviewing extremely well, is likely to be on top for a bit here. This will be Mike Flanagan’s last project with Netflix, despite his long history there, because they lost him to Amazon where he’s heading next, and possibly may do a Dark Tower series for them, an almost impossible project adapting Stephen King’s famed series.

On the rest of the list, Big Vape, the story of Juul, is #2 and I saw it briefly flip up to #1, unseating Beckham first, which is now #3. I have been a little surprised to see the performance of Lupin season 3, as it was one of Netflix’s biggest sleeper hit series, and it hasn’t, and probably will not get to #1 in the US here.

Reality shows Love is Blind and The Great British Baking show are next. Pact of Silence, a telenovela, is #7, and a newer show to the list. Shane Gillis’ comedy special has been in the list for quite a long time for a one hour program, so he’s got to be feeling pretty good about that. And Virgin River is still in the top 10 list at #10, a monster performance from the show.

We’ll see how long The Fall of the House of Usher lasts on top, hopefully a while, and you should definitely watch it.
