The Senate’s move is in response to a motion titled “Galadimawa kidnap incident response and need to urgently enhance security measures in FCT, Nigeria,” sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP, North).
The motion highlights the tragic abduction of 19 individuals, including Senator Nwoko’s Senior Legislative Aide, Barrister Chris Agidy, in Galadimawa, Abuja.
In a closed-door session, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, emphasized the importance of hearing from the FCT Minister and Police Commissioner about the measures and strategies being put in place to stem the tide of kidnappings in the FCT.
The Senate has also urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to increase security patrols and surveillance within Abuja and across the nation for proactive measures against kidnappings.
In addition, the Senate has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission to ensure the functionality of dedicated emergency numbers for police, ambulance, and fire service emergencies.
The Senate’s decision to summon the FCT Minister and Police Commissioner comes after the successful operation of the FCT Police Command, which led to the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin, Samaila Wakili Fafa, also known as Habu Ibrahim.
Fafa has been on the command’s wanted list and has admitted to orchestrating numerous kidnappings in the FCT and its surrounding areas.
The recent kidnapping and killing of Senator Nwoko’s Senior Legislative Aide and other residents of the FCT have raised serious concerns among the Senate and the public.
The Senate’s actions show a strong commitment to addressing the issue and ensuring the safety and security of the people in the FCT and Nigeria as a whole.
With the Senate’s proactive measures, the hope is that the tide of kidnappings in the FCT will be stemmed, and the safety and security of the people will be restored.READ FULL ARTICLE HERE
