Britney Spears is back inside the top 10 on the U.S. iTunes chart, but she doesn’t have a new single out. The pop superstar’s song “Selfish’’ appears seemingly out of nowhere on the platform’s list of the bestselling tracks in America. Its newfound and surprising success isn’t entirely random, though. In fact, it’s tied to one of her former flame’s newest offering.
Justin Timberlake returned on Thursday with his long-awaited comeback single, “Selfish.” The tune is off to a strong start, as it appears to be selling well, according to the iTunes chart. After only a few hours of activity, the tune may be headed toward a notable debut on the Billboard charts in a week or so.
At the time of writing, Spears’ “Selfish” sits at No. 4 on the U.S. iTunes ranking, while Timberlake’s has been holding court at No. 1 essentially since it was released.
Spears fans have flocked to support her–or perhaps just troll Timberlake–by buying her song of the same name as his succeeds as well. The two musicians dated more than 20 years ago, and at the time, they were noted as one of the hottest celebrity couples. While they haven’t been together in many years–they’ve both been married and had families since their split–they will seemingly always be connected to one another.
The former romance was pushed back into the spotlight last year when Spears published her memoir, The Woman In Me. In her book, the singer shared that she became pregnant during their courtship. She alleges that Timberlake convinced her to get an abortion, while she says that she would have kept the child, had she not listened to his concerns.
This revelation was another blow to Timberlake, whose star was already not burning as brightly as it had in the past. The singer faced a deluge of negative comments on social media and think pieces in the media regarding his past behavior. Now, Spears fans aren’t letting this comeback moment slip by without doing what they can to taint his recent win, if only slightly.
Spears released her “Selfish” back in 2011. The track was never pushed as a single, so it’s likely that many non-followers of the singer may not know of its existence. The tune was only available on the deluxe edition of her Femme Fatale album, which spawned hits like “Hold It Against Me” and “Till the World Ends.”
