Cummins will be sharing information about its hydrogen strategy in the construction sector at its booth at The Utility Expo, held in Louisville, KY.
“Change is hard. Transitioning the off-highway and commercial vehicle markets away from carbon-based fuel is very challenging. There isn’t a single solution that will accomplish this transition. The industry needs multiple solutions that enable carbon reductions today, tomorrow, and in the future,” said Jim Nebergall, Cummins Hydrogen ICE general manager. “Hydrogen engines can deliver on these needs and will play an instrumental role in the industry’s decarbonization journey. This versatile zero-carbon fueled technology integrates into existing equipment while providing diesel-like performance and maintenance practices. Hydrogen engines are the least disruptive technology for the commercial markets.”
A Cummins hydrogen engine will be on display in the Cummins booth at The Utility Expo – it will show off the new fuel-agnostic 15-litre platform with hydrogen, biogas, and advanced diesel options. The new platform, designed for the next level of emissions, has a significant increase in power density with a more compact installation envelope that allows OEMs to increase machine capability and productivity with no impact on running cost.
The 15-litre fuel-agnostic engine uses a common base engine with cylinder heads and fuel systems specifically tailored for hydrogen, natural gas, diesel, and biofuels including HVO. Ratings from 400 to 530 hp will be available in the hydrogen engine, along with a peak torque of 2,600 Nm. Diesel and biofuel will feature different power ranges.
Along with the new engine solutions at the Cummins booth, Cummins Meritor will be on hand showing the MX-810 axle and MTC-4200AC Series transfer case. The MX-810 is designed for medium- and heavy-duty vocational applications, has a weight rating up to 24,000 pounds, and provides maneuverability and ground clearance for improved payloads and mobility in vocational use.
The MTC-4000 series of transfer cases, including the MTC-4200AC, are four-shaft, two-speed transfer cases with capabilities to ensure performance in demanding situations.
Nebergall will also present on Cummins’ hydrogen program during the annual Diesel Progress Summit, also being held in Louisville.
