Essien Andrew a senior officer of the Nigeria Customs Service died on Tuesday while answering questions at a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Public Account Committee.
The incident happened around 1:00 PM on June 25, 2024.
During the session, the officer became ill very quickly. Although first responders and medical staff at the National Assembly Clinic tried to help him, he passed away shortly after.
The House of Representatives expressed deep sadness over the loss.
Akin Rotimi, the spokesperson for the House, said, “We are truly saddened to confirm the death of a respected Customs Service official. We are keeping his name private to respect his family.”
He added that the House sends its heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues and appreciates his service to the nation.
The Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, also expressed his sorrow, saying, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.”
The House is working to understand exactly what happened and will cooperate with all relevant authorities to ensure all proper steps are taken during this investigation.
