American-born Nigerian superstar Davido recently made headlines not for his music but for his venture into cryptocurrency. This move which captured the attention of both fans and investors saw Davido launch his memecoin, aptly named DAVIDO.
Within hours of its release, the singer managed to rake in a staggering $474,400. Here’s how it all unfolded.
From launch to lucrative returns
On May 29, Davido took the crypto world by storm by creating his very own memecoin using Pump.fun, a platform known for launching celebrity tokens. With an initial investment of 7.5 SOL (approximately $1,275), Davido bought a whopping 203 million DAVIDO tokens, securing about 20.3% of the total supply for himself.
The excitement was palpable on his X social media account, where Davido boasts a following of over 15 million. Promotions and updates flowed steadily as he engaged with his audience, urging them to invest in his latest venture. The result? A rapid sell-off that occurred just 11 hours post-launch, where Davido sold 121.88 million DAVIDO for 2,791 SOL, netting around $474,400 in the process.
But that wasn’t all. In a surprising turn of events, Davido then transferred 20 million DAVIDO to a dormant wallet address, keeping the remaining 61.12 million tokens—valued at about $207,000—in his possession.
Market reactions
Despite the initial success, the massive dump had its repercussions. According to GeckoTerminal data, the price of DAVIDO plummeted by over 90% from its peak on the day of the launch. At the time of writing, the memecoin has lost 72.41% of its value in just six hours, now trading at a mere $0.001933 with a market capitalization of $2 million. Yet, despite these fluctuations, the token has seen over 7,619 transactions, showing a notable trading volume of $171,390.
Davido, seemingly undeterred by the market’s volatility, continues to promote DAVIDO on his X account. He remains optimistic, encouraging holders of the memecoin to “HODL” (a crypto-community jargon for ‘hold on for dear life’) and aim for a market cap of $30 million.
