Delhi govt takes emergency measures as national capital grapples with severe heatwave

Amid a sweltering heatwave that claimed five lives in Delhi and at least 10 lives in Noida, Delhi Health Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj chaired a meeting with heads of all major hospitals in the national capital and instructed them to scale up patient beds.

In Uttar Pradesh, at least 44 people have died due to heatstroke since May, the state authorities said.

Northern India is battling the longest heatwave India has ever witnessed. The southwest monsoon’s advancement seems to have staggered despite an early onset of monsoon in Kerala.

Delhi, the national capital, is also battling a severe water crisis and power outages as the city records historic peak electricity demands.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that conditions are now favourable for further advancement of the monsoon, which had made no significant progress between June 12 and 18, extending the wait for rains in North India, which is reeling from the sweltering heat.

Delhi heatwave: What AAP minister instructed

-The Delhi Police’s beat officers and patrolling teams have been directed to help shift homeless people to shelter homes in case they are found on footpaths under open sky.

-The Delhi Police Commissioner has asked patrolling teams to call ambulances if they spot destitute who are sick.

-Hospitals are told to scale up beds for patients with heat-related illnesses.

-According to Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, the Delhi government had asked all healthcare centres to ensure that the emergency rooms remain operational round the clock.

-A senior doctor must always remain present in the emergency ward to handle patients affected due to prolonged heat. Further, all the necessary medicines required for the treatment of such patients must be available in hospitals.

-All the CDMOs are also directed to ensure that even if such a patient comes to the dispensaries, immediate treatment is given, and he/she is shifted to the nearest hospital in an ambulance

-Healthcare workers are also directed to ensure that the calls for such admission of patients are attended immediately and the patients are transferred to the nearest hospitals.

– All CATS Department ambulances must remain on high alert day and night, and a few must be parked near the most affected areas and shelter homes.

-Delhi government-run hospitals will reserve two beds each for heatstroke patients, while five beds will be reserved at the LNJP Hospital.

-On Wednesday, maximum temperatures ranged from 43 to 45 degrees Celsius in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan.
