In a shocking turn of events, Somtochukwu Okwuoha, a Nigerian Master’s student specializing in international energy studies, now faces the grim prospects of imprisonment and subsequent deportation.
This development follows his conviction for issuing terrorist threats against Dundee University, a prominent UK educational institution.
Okwuoha associated with ISIS
Okwuoha, 26, stood accused of communicating menacing threats, including plans to bomb the university and unleashing a chemical attack on the city. The gravity of these threats was underscored by his claim of having ties with ISIS, a notorious terrorist organization, and his alleged readiness to execute a mass murder on campus.
This disturbing revelation emerged during a trial that led to his conviction on seven serious charges.
Keith Mackle, a retired director at the university, recounted how Okwuoha’s threatening emails sent tremors of fear across the campus. One such email chillingly predicted a catastrophe surpassing the 9/11 attacks, with vivid descriptions of bombs, widespread death, and chaos.
Okwuoha was found guilty of threats
Further exacerbating the situation, Okwuoha was found guilty of making threats to behead police officers and to detonate bombs he claimed to have planted at the university. His conviction also included charges of threatening to use biological weapons and revealing staff details to international authorities.
The case has raised profound concerns about campus safety and the detection of extremism among international students. Sheriff William Wood, presiding over the case, expressed the seriousness of the matter and indicated that a decision on Okwuoha’s deportation to Nigeria would be considered alongside his sentencing next month.
As the university community and the city of Dundee grapple with the aftermath of these harrowing threats, questions linger about the mechanisms in place to prevent such extremist ideologies from taking root and the adequacy of current security protocols in higher education settings.
