‘Destiny 2’ Indicates Its Hive God Eris Seasonal Story Isn’t Over Just Yet

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 has followed the usual pattern of eight weeks or so of reset-based story content every Tuesday, culminating in a cutscene and lore dump last week that had Eris cutting Xivu Arath off from her Throne World, making her “mortal,” and Savathun being revived and peacing out (but not before being murdered by Saint-14 a bunch of times).

However, Bungie is now indicating that despite what seemed like a somewhat conclusive end to the season that is…not the case just yet.

In a new tweet, Bungie says that Season of the Witch “isn’t over yet,” seemingly indicating that perhaps Eris Morn is not the strongest Hive there has ever been, though I’m not quite sure what that’s implying. Eris has lost her Hive power, we think. Savathun is alive but able to be one-shot by Saint at this point. Xivu Arath is mortal. Oryx is dead and his corpse is now a dungeon arena. So what…is being referenced here?

It appears as if there will be some sort of season-ending event that comes well after the current end of the storyline, something that will no doubt not take place within the next few weeks of Destiny 2’s Halloween event, Festival of the Lost. There are some indications this may have something to do with secrets buried in Destiny 2’s Imbaru Engine, its puzzle-based activity that has flown under the radar a bit this season, and still has triumphs to achieve inside it.

Next season will be the last one before The Final Shape, making it hugely important to set up that expansion, even if we know the end result, the ability for us to make it through the Witness’s Traveler Portal and confront him there. Once again we are in the weird situation where a six month-early preview of the expansion has given us the endpoint, but we don’t quite know how we get there.

Perhaps this is a final battle against Xivu Arath herself, now that she’s mortal, something we’re actually taking care of before this season ends. But Xivu Arath seems like too big a figure to be killed in some one-off story mission, as she has at least dungeon, raid or Final Shape campaign boss written all over her. But honestly I hope that Xivu Arath survives past The Final Shape and we have a good villain in the new era still lurking around. I am almost positive Savathun will survive the next expansion and continue to be a character going forward.

I believe there are leaks and datamines about what exactly is coming here, but I am avoiding those like the plague as I would still enjoy Destiny actually surprising me where it can. This seems likely to happen a week or two before the season ends, and I would not expect it before then. Until then, Happy Festival of the Lost.
