Divided loyalty: Can Rivers’ commissioners serve two masters?

Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers State, has sworn in nine commissioners who were re-nominated in the state executive council.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the State Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt last Friday.

These commissioners, who had earlier resigned their positions amid the political rivalry between former governor Nyesom Wike and Fubara, have been re-screened and re-confirmed by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This action follows the terms outlined in the eight-point agenda, a resolution reached after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in the political discord between Wike and Fubara.

In his address, Fubara congratulated the commissioners and urged them to prioritise the interest of the state. He emphasised the importance of upholding the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and urged them to fulfil their responsibilities diligently.

He encouraged them to focus on serving the people of Rivers State diligently. He also acknowledged their potential challenge, stating: “You were caught in the crossfire.”

Questions remain about the commissioners’ loyalties and the potential impact on Fubara’s administration.

Section 192 of the Nigerian Constitution empowers governors to appoint commissioners who work with them and can be dismissed at any time. This implies loyalty and commitment to the governor’s administration.

However, the nine commissioners’ perceived loyalty to Wike, who is in political conflict with Fubara, raises concerns about potential divided loyalty and their ability to fully commit to Fubara’s agenda.

The commissioners may prioritise Wike’s interests, creating friction within the government. Alignments with Wike could lead to opposing views on policy initiatives.
