Inside a 10-x-10 crib in the bunker of the Dolphin Estate Bridge, towards the den of the Ikoyi-rich, life’s cool. Especially so for vagrants ponying up N250,000 to some landlord in annual rent.
But the Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, just ratted out scores of them.
About 22 of the occupants idled around in their ‘apartments’ at the time the state raided the ‘estate’ on April 30. The ministry’s taskforce many call KAI ( Kick Against Indiscipline) have since taken them into custody.
“A total number of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the bridge,” Wahab said in a video.
Accommodation remains a major problem in Lagos, Nigeria’s megacity hosting over 20 million people. As of 2016, the state claimed 123,840 people moved in daily—at 86 per minute.
Wahab said the enforcement team have removed all the illegal settlers.
“These people created their illegal settlements under the bridge, exposing the critical infrastructure to impending destruction,” an aide to Gov Babjide Sanwo Olu said.
For their convenience, the settlers bought generating sets, and maintained a depot of petrol to power them.
The adviser noted the settlers used wood to construct the shelters.
“Some used gas cylinders. These are recipes for disasters,” he said.
