In a development that has sent shockwaves through the corridors of power, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has cast its investigative net over Abubakar Ahmad Sirika, the sibling of the erstwhile Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika. The probe centres on a staggering N8.06 billion contract fraud allegation that has tarnished the reputation of the Federal Ministry of Aviation during the tenure of the ex-minister.
Arrest and Allegations
On a quiet Sunday, the 4th of February, Abubakar found himself ensnared by the long arm of the law, arrested as part of a meticulous probe into the alleged corrupt practices that plagued the Ministry of Aviation under his brother’s stewardship. The allegations are grave and multifaceted, encompassing conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of public funds, contract inflation, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering.
At the heart of this scandal is Engirios Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Abubakar, who, despite being a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, is alleged to have been unduly favoured with four lucrative contracts during his brother’s regime at the ministry. These contracts, which include the construction of a terminal building and a fire truck maintenance and refurbishment centre at Katsina Airport, as well as the procurement and installation of various equipment for Aviation House in Abuja and the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, cumulatively amount to about N8.07 billion.

A substantial sum of N3.21 billion, part of the contract payment, was traced directly to Engirios Nigeria Limited. Yet, despite the significant outlay, there is no evidence to suggest that any of the contracted works were ever commenced, let alone completed. This revelation has raised serious questions about the integrity of the contract awards and the oversight mechanisms within the ministry.
Abubakar Sirika, who holds the reins as the Managing Director and CEO of Engirios Nigeria Limited, and is the sole signatory to the company’s accounts, is accused of diverting the funds to various companies and individuals, further complicating the web of deceit. His arrest has peeled back the layers on a saga of nepotism and corruption that has besmirched the Ministry of Aviation, revealing a tale of unchecked power and greed.
