El Ministerio para la Transformación Digital destina 4 millones a una infraestructura experimental en 5G y 6G

La Escuela de Ingeniería de Bilbao de la UPV/EHU ha sido la adjudicataria de la subvención que servirá para el despliegue de infraestructuras 5G y 6G avanzadas en diversos entornos.

El Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública, capitaneado en la actualidad por José Luis Escrivá, ha otorgado alrededor de 4 millones de euros a una infraestructura experimental en 5G y 6G. A través de la Secretaría de Estado de Telecomunicaciones e Infraestructuras Digitales y en el marco del Programa UNICO I+D 6G, el Ejecutivo formaliza la subvención destinada a la Escuela de Ingeniería de Bilbao de la UPV/EHU.

En concreto, se trata de dos proyectos de financiación de infraestructuras de investigación SN4E y SN4E+ presentados por el equipo de investigación I2T de la escuela a las convocatorias estatales. Según ha informado el centro universitario, estos proyectos, más próximos a la ciencia aplicada que a la ciencia básica, proponen el despliegue de infraestructuras 5G y 6G avanzadas para aplicarlas a diversos entornos.

El equipo de investigación I2T, liderado por el profesor Eduardo Jacob, cuenta con el apoyo de diversos grupos de investigación a través de una aproximación interdisciplinar, cubriendo áreas de las TIC y 5G/6G. Desde la fabricación inteligente, redes en tiempo real, automatización de procesos, comunicaciones ópticas, modelado matemático, tratamiento de la señal y radiocomunicaciones, hasta las ciencias de la salud y jurídicas.

Avances significativos

“Las tecnologías 5G y 6G comportan una serie de avances fundamentales para entornos industriales y servicios avanzados, entre los que se incluyen velocidades de conexión ultra rápidas, baja latencia y capacidad para conectar un gran número de dispositivos de forma simultánea, lo que las convierte en un elemento clave para la Industria 4.0”, ha afirmado Eduardo Jacob. Con estos equipos, de hecho, el 5G proporciona una capacidad de descarga y velocidad mucho mayores.

“Adicionalmente, esta tecnología permite disponer de sensores de muy bajo coste, capaces de mandar pequeños fragmentos de información durante años, sin más energía que una pequeña batería o panel solar o incluso recuperando energía del entorno. Esto permite sembrar sensores en grandes áreas como bosques o zonas remotas y monitorizar parámetros ambientales”, ha descrito. Asimismo. también permite, mediante equipos adecuados, proporcionar enlaces inalámbricos “redundantes, casi instantáneos y con un retardo muy bajo y constante”.

Estos equipamientos van a mejorar la infraestructura de investigación en 5G y 6G denominada Smart Networks for Everything (SmartNets4E) y desplegada en las tres localizaciones de la UPV/EHU: el Centro de Fabricación Avanzado Aeronáutica de Zamudio, el rectorado de Leioa y la Escuela de Ingeniería de Bilbao. “La ayuda de 4 millones de euros servirá para la materialización y evaluación de 5G y tecnologías asociadas en una infraestructura desplegada en estos entornos”.

Investigación paneuropea

Esta red (SmartNets4E) forma parte de la infraestructura de investigación paneuropea SLICES-RI (Infraestructura científica a gran escala para estudios experimentales de informática y comunicación), incluida por el European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) en su hoja de ruta desde junio de 2021. SLICES-RI es una plataforma flexible diseñada para apoyar la investigación experimental a gran escala en tecnologías de comunicaciones. El nodo vasco, liderado por el equipo de investigación I2T de la Escuela de Ingeniería de Bilbao, es el segundo nodo de este tipo del Estado, y por su topología, cuenta con la posibilidad de conectarse de manera directa y con gran ancho de banda a todas las redes académicas disponibles, incluida la europea GÉANT.
