Empowering Media and CSOs: CISLAC Conducts Training on Freedom of Information Act
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Nigeria’s National Chapter of Transparency International (TI), recently organized a one-day training for media and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) focusing on the use of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act.
The event aimed to equip participants with knowledge on accessing information from government institutions and relevant authorities using the FOI Act.
Held at the Bolton White Hotel in Abuja on September 13, 2023, the training focused on enhancing democratic accountability in public institutions and promoting awareness of national issues.
CISLAC’S Senior Legal Officer, Bathsheba Tagwai presented the SANCUS (Strengthening and Accountability Network Amongst Civil Society) project, emphasizing its goal to improve democratic accountability globally.
During the event, discussions were held on political integrity and political party financing. Mrs. Tagwai stressed the importance of political power being exercised in the public interest without undue influence and emphasized transparency, inclusive decision-making, and public and institutional scrutiny as vital components for achieving political integrity.
Mr. Edward Samuel, a senior program officer at the National Orientation Agency, provided insights on how the FOI Act can promote transparency, accountability, and openness in government affairs.
He emphasized the Act’s potential in enhancing openness, transparency, and accountability in government operations, highlighting its role as a potent tool against corruption in Nigeria.
The training delved into essential elements of the FOI Act, clarifying its provisions and the process for requesting information. Participants were encouraged to utilize the FOI Act to request crucial information from public institutions, reinforcing transparency and accountability in governance.
One of the participants, Ms. Shehu Jemila, expressed gratitude to CISLAC for the insightful training. She commended Mr. Edward Samuel for delivering a detailed and explanatory session, enabling her to better understand the FOI Act and its practical applications in sharing ideas with the media.
The training concluded at 1:00 pm, followed by a complimentary lunch for the participants, further fostering engagement and networking. CISLAC’s efforts in empowering media and CSOs through knowledge and awareness reflect their dedication to promoting transparency, accountability, and democratic values within Nigeria’s public sphere.
