Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in a Manhattan federal jail while awaiting trial after being charged with multiple counts related to sex trafficking. He previously pleaded guilty to a Florida state charge related to soliciting an underage prostitute as part of a 2007 non-prosecution agreement. He served nearly 13 months and registered as a sex offender.
Maxwell, a former girlfriend and “madame” for Epstein, was found guilty of trafficking girls to the financier and of sexual abuse in a 2021 criminal trial. She is currently serving a 20-year sentence.
The documents are part of a civil suit filed against Maxwell by an accuser, Virginia Giuffre. Epstein settled a separate lawsuit with Giuffre in 2009, and Maxwell settled her lawsuit in 2017.
Many of the documents in the case — from depositions to legalese-filled arguments — were previously filed under seal. US District Judge Loretta Preska, who’s overseeing the litigation in Manhattan, has unsealed many of the documents on a piecemeal basis over the past several years.
Wednesday night’s batch of documents comes after she ordered the unsealing of documents that name those 170 associates, ruling that the public’s right to know what’s in them outweighs any privacy rights they may have.
The first batch of the documents were posted to the public docket by Giuffre’s lawyers on Wednesday night. Additional documents will be filed by either attorneys for Giuffre or Maxwell on Thursday, according to the source familiar with the situation.
Now, hundreds of documents are available for perusal.
