FEC Meetings Should not Hold Without Country’s Statistician-General – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has expressed worry that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings hold on a regular basis without the Statistician-General of the Federation or any representative of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to guide the Council on the kind of decisions to make.

Senator Sani who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, was speaking at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the production of National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) Phase III, 2024-2028, organised by the NBS.

In his goodwill message, Senator Sani said the foundation of any decision or government policy has to be statistics and data, adding that since the FEC is the highest decision making body in the country, the Statistician-General who doubles as the Head of the NBS should be a member of the Council.

Sani contended that not taking small details into consideration is the sole reason the country has been struggling even though the facts are data meant to guide the leaders in their decision making process are available.

“Just like we start every meeting in Nigeria with opening prayer, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings should start with a briefing from the head of NBS or his representative so that we can get something right in this country for once.

“At the beginning of the every FEC meeting, the President who chairs the Council is supposed to call on the NBS Head and tell him to brief them on the latest facts and figures on the situation of Nigeria, so that they can know where to start the meeting from,” he said.

He argued that FEC without NBS representatives has been leading the country astray over the years.

Sani also frowned at the discordant figures that come from government circles about the situation of Nigeria, adding that politicians should trust and work with the credible figures that come from the NBS at all times.

He commended the NBS for elevating the professional practice of research and statistics in the country, calling on government at all levels and the private sector to base their activities and policy decisions on its figures.
