GRS Group has been picked to complete the East Stand at Sixfields Stadium in Northampton, which was left unfinished after the collapse of Buckingham Group in August.
Construction of the stand at Northampton Town Football Club’s (NTFC’s) stadium was beset with problems even before the failure of its main contractor, with construction pausing for eight years.
Buckingham started work on the new stand for the League One team in 2014, but stopped work on the project twice – in 2014 and 2015 – citing non-payment.
In 2015, the contractor brought a winding-up petition against the company that was set up to oversee the development of the new stand, County Developments (Northhampton) Limited (CNDL), claiming it was owed £2.9m.
After a High Court judge ruled in CNDL’s favour, NTFC reopened discussions with Buckingham. The club had been awaiting an updated quotation for the stadium work at the time of the contractor’s collapse in August.
GRS Group chief executive Jon Fisher said: “With our local connections we understand the importance to the club and the community of this project, and we are looking forward to getting on site, completing the job, and for the fans to be using the East Stand fully once again.
“We have enjoyed getting to know the club and we will be working closely with them going forward.”
NTFC chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “Having spoken to various contractors and following a thorough tendering process, we feel that GRS offers the best solution.
“GRS is a large company with a dedicated contracting division which has extensive experience in specialist construction and major projects.
“It also has a number of local connections, with many GRS employees living in the county and [GRS having] sponsored Northampton Saints [rugby team] for many years.”
