Her rise to fame was meteoric, leveraging her beauty and charm to captivate a vast audience. However, beneath this veneer of glamour and independence, a darker narrative was brewing.
In an elaborate scheme targeting older, single Americans, Mona engaged in what’s locally known as ‘sakawa’ – a term for internet fraud. The ploy was simple yet sinister: establish a romantic connection with her targets, gain their trust, and then exploit that trust for financial gain. One such victim, an older man from the United States, was drawn into her web of deception. Believing in their blossoming romance, he was duped into sending Mona substantial amounts of money under the pretense of helping her father’s farm in Ghana.
The turning point in this tale came when Mona sent a tribal marriage document to this man, claiming it signified their marriage in Ghana. This act not only deepened the victim’s belief in their relationship but also escalated the scam to new heights. Over time, he sent approximately 82 wire transfers totaling about $89,000 to Mona.
However, the law eventually caught up with Mona. Arrested in the United Kingdom and extradited to the United States, she faced the grim reality of her actions in a Manhattan federal court. Charged with involvement in these romance schemes and laundering the proceeds, Mona pled not guilty. Despite her plea, she was placed under home detention in New Jersey, her movements restricted by a GPS ankle monitor, a stark contrast to her previously glamorous lifestyle.
The FBI, emphasizing the seriousness of romance scams, especially those targeting the elderly, was determined to hold fraudsters accountable. Mona’s case, thus, stands as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers in the digital age, where online personas can mask ulterior motives, and the quest for love can lead to exploitation and heartbreak.
