How Herbert Wigwe’s Philanthropy Moved Billionaires to Tears

The tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Access Bank’s esteemed CEO, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son, has plunged Nigerian billionaires to tears. Yet, amidst the grief, Nigerians reflect on the profound legacy of a man whose life touched countless hearts and minds.

In a poignant ceremony held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, corporate luminaries and political figures from across Nigeria gathered to pay tribute to Herbert Wigwe’s enduring impact.

Notable attendees included Aliko Dangote, Wale Edun, governors, the CBN governor, and esteemed bank CEOs, each offering heartfelt reflections.

Wigwe’s philanthropic vision through the Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe (HOW) Foundation reverberates in the lives of thousands:

Educating Almajiri Children: Herbert Wigwe’s foundation supports the education of 13,000 Almajiri children in Kaduna State, providing hope and opportunity to marginalized communities.

Medical Training: Over five years, Wigwe’s initiatives facilitated the training of 75 doctors in Israel and the USA, investing in healthcare and human capital development.

Healthcare Upgrade: Committing 2.3 billion naira, Wigwe spearheaded the upgrade and operational support of 23 primary healthcare centres across Rivers State, ensuring access to quality healthcare for underserved populations.

Wigwe’s dedication extended to his hometown in Isiokpo, Rivers State, where he was a source of unwavering support and generosity:

Annually, Wigwe brought joy to the community by distributing trailer loads of rice, rams, goats, and cows during Christmas, embodying the spirit of giving and community solidarity.

Heartfelt Tributes:

Netizens and prominent figures alike poured out their emotions and memories, underscoring the profound impact of Herbert Wigwe’s life.

Dr. Sijibomi Ogundele LLB:  When billionaires shed tears, it’s a profound reminder that they too are formed with bones and blood. Witnessing Dangote’s heartfelt tribute at the wake of the late Mr. Herbert Wigwe, a titan whose legacy transcends wealth, struck a cord in my heart, thus fueling my passion to impact lives and keep aspiring for greatness.

Õnimisi Mustie:  Herbert Wigwe was Sanusi’s friend before he became emir, from way back. When Sanusi was dethroned Herbert gave him a private jet to go anywhere he wanted, lodged him in a hotel in Lagos and later rented an apartment for him and his family.

They are very good friends, if I had a friend like Herbert I’d cry and more while giving a tribute of how nice he was to me.

Tolu Ogunlesi: Listened to tributes to Herbert Wigwe at this memorial event. So many personal stories.

I was just there wondering—how did he keep so many things going at the same time AND ALSO keep so many people so close to him, showing full interest in what they were doing. Remarkable, really.”
