At Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Abakaliki, the academic journey of a student, Favour Ugwuka, ended in tragedy when she took her own life. The suicide which happened at her hostel at the Ishieke Campus, cast a long shadow over the university community.
According to sources close to Favour, she had repeatedly failed a specific course, despite passing all others. A lecturer whose name remains yet unknown associated with this course reportedly claimed that he would never allow her to pass. This ongoing struggle not only led to financial strain, as she had to pay additional tuition to retake the exam but also significant emotional distress.
Favour’s plight worsened when the latest list for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was announced, and her name was absent.
The tragedy went viral after a video captured Favour’s mother, overwhelmed by grief, condemning the actions of the unnamed lecturer. “The lecturer boasted that he is the best, that no one can teach like him. Now, he can come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide,” she lamented in despair.

It’s heart-wrenching that her journey ended this way. She was desperate to graduate and start her service year, a dream that now remains unfulfilled,” Rex shared.
