Favour Oghene Tejiri Ashe, a Prominent Nigerian Sprinter, Detained in the US for Alleged Theft and Fraudulent Activities
In a recent development from the United States, Ashe, a distinguished 21-year-old Nigerian sprinter, has found himself embroiled in legal troubles following his arrest on allegations of theft and fraud. The incident, unfolding in Auburn, Alabama, has cast a shadow over Ashe’s illustrious athletic career.
Auburn Police apprehended Ashe on Thursday, subsequent to investigations stemming from a theft report filed on the 4th of February, 2024. A victim had reported the theft of multiple items from a purse in the vicinity of the 100 block of West Magnolia Avenue, including a credit card which was later used for several fraudulent transactions.
Ashe faces serious charges, including four counts of fraudulent use of a debit/credit card and two counts of third-degree theft of property. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Lee County Jail, where he is currently being held on a bond of $9,000.
Favour Ashe, renowned for his sprinting prowess, has been a shining star in Nigerian athletics. In 2022, he clocked an impressive 9.99 seconds in the 100 meters at the national championships, further enhancing his record with a personal best of 9.96 seconds at the semi-final of the NCAA Championships last year. His contributions to Nigerian athletics have been significant, representing the country at the World Athletics Championships in 2022 and 2023, as well as securing a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
This arrest marks Ashe as the latest in a series of US-based Nigerian athletes to face legal issues related to fraud in the United States. A report from BoldSports in November 2022 highlighted the indictment and charges against five Nigerian athletes, including Toluwani Adebakin, Emmanuel Ineh, Raymond Ekevwo, Mercy Abire, and Aniekeme Etim, for their involvement in wire and mail fraud activities.
As the legal proceedings against Favour Ashe unfold, the athletics community and his fans await further developments, hoping for a resolution to this unfortunate episode.
