How Safe Are You? Exploring the 10 African Cities with the Highest Crime Rates & their Global Standings
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

How safe are you when exploring the diverse landscapes and bustling cities across Africa? This vast continent offers a wealth of experiences, from vibrant cultures to natural wonders. However, it’s crucial to consider the varying crime rates in African cities when planning a visit or even a move.

It is important to understand the root causes of crime in Africa, whether it’s poverty, lack of education, poor governance, or other factors, is key to developing effective safety strategies. So, how do these African cities compare to each other and to global standards in terms of crime rates?

According to an online data platform Numbeo, crime rates can differ significantly depending on a city’s location and population density. Numbeo’s Crime Index, derived from visitor surveys, offers an evaluative measure of the overall degree of crime in various cities and nations. The platform categorizes crime levels on a scale from very low to very high, providing valuable insights into the safety conditions of different regions.  Let’s take a look at some of these cities.

Pretoria, South Africa

With a staggering crime index of 81.8, Pretoria stands as the second most dangerous city globally and tops the list among African cities. This South African capital city falls into the “very high” crime level category according to Numbeo’s classification. Such a rating reflects a complex blend of factors, including poverty, unemployment, and governance challenges, which are often cited as contributing to high African crime rates.

Durban, South Africa

Durban has a high crime rate of 80.8 and is the fourth most dangerous city in the world according to global rankings. Even though it’s famous for its beautiful beaches and busy ports, crime, especially violent acts like murder, has been increasing. In 2015, the area around Durban was even named the most dangerous in South Africa. So, while the city has a lot to offer, it’s important to be extra careful, especially at night. These high crime rates make Durban a key city to consider when discussing safety issues in African cities.

Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg, one of South Africa’s largest cities with over 5 million residents, holds a dual reputation, it’s both a must-see global destination and the fifth most dangerous city in the world, with a crime index of 80.8. While the city boasts numerous attractions, it also has a high incidence of crimes like murder, assault, and robberies.

Since 2015, Johannesburg has also been grappling with xenophobic violence. These troubling figures are part of a broader conversation about high crime rates in African cities. If you plan to visit Johannesburg, it’s crucial to be cautious, stick to safer neighborhoods, avoid walking at night in crowded places, and keep your belongings secure to minimize the risk of theft or other criminal activity.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth, known as the Windy City, is a tourist hotspot on South Africa’s Eastern Cape coast. It’s famous for its warm climate and cultural heritage, with historical ties to early explorers like Vasco Da Gama. Despite its attractions, the city ranks ninth globally in crime, with an index of 76.8. Street crimes like muggings are all too common here, similar to other South African cities.

Port Elizabeth has also seen its share of xenophobic violence, especially when tensions run high nationally. In 2014, the city had a particularly high murder rate, closely following its rate from the previous year. This data adds to the growing concern about crime rates in African cities, emphasizing the need for vigilance while enjoying the area’s many attractions.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town, despite being South Africa’s legislative capital and a renowned tourist destination, holds the 16th spot on the global crime index with a crime score rate of 73.6. Long known for its high levels of violence, the city outpaced both Johannesburg and Pretoria in the number of murders between April and March 2011. Common crimes in Cape Town range from drug trafficking and mugging to violent robberies and bribery.

The city’s nighttime violence is often linked to drug gangs and persistent income inequality in non-white regions. These grim statistics add another layer to the ongoing discussion about high crime rates in African cities, underlining the need for caution while navigating Cape Town’s otherwise captivating environment.

It’s notable that the top five most dangerous cities in Africa, according to the index, are all located in South Africa.

Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling metropolis with an estimated 21 million residents, ranks 33rd on the global crime index with a score of 67.8. As one of the largest cities in the world, Lagos also holds the unfortunate distinction of being one of the most dangerous cities in Africa. Residents and expatriates face a variety of crimes ranging from murders and armed robberies to kidnappings and cybercrimes. In some instances, armed robbers have been known to scale fences and disable guards, while others access waterfront areas by boat. Street gangs, commonly referred to as “area boys,” also contribute to the city’s high crime rates, frequently causing chaos on Lagos’s main streets.

Windhoek, Namibia

Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, holds the 34th position on the global crime index with a score of 67.6. Although not as populous or as globally recognized as some other African cities, Windhoek faces significant safety concerns. Crimes such as theft, burglary, and violent assaults are prevalent, impacting both residents and tourists alike. Despite being one of Namibia’s major cultural and economic hubs, the city’s crime rates put it on the list of places requiring caution.

Harare, Zimbabwe

With a crime index of 67.8, Harare ranks 33rd globally in terms of criminal activity. Though it serves as Zimbabwe’s economic, political, and cultural center, Harare is fraught with safety concerns, including theft, assault, and other violent crimes. These issues put Harare on the map as one of the African cities facing considerable crime rates, requiring both residents and visitors to exercise increased caution. This reflects the larger issue of high crime rates in African cities, suggesting a need for more effective safety strategies.

Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya’s economic hub and capital, ranks 33rd on the global crime index with a score of 67.8. While the city is attractive for both local and foreign investment, it is also a hotbed for various forms of crime. Residents and visitors alike face risks ranging from armed carjackings and burglaries to kidnappings and muggings. Additionally, Nairobi has seen a rise in more specialized crimes like credit card skimming and cybercrime. The city has also been the target of grenade and terrorist attacks in recent years. These statistics add Nairobi to the list of African cities with high crime rates, underlining the need for heightened security measures for both residents and tourists.

Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, shares the 33rd spot on the global crime index, with a rating of 67.8. Known for its economic vitality and cultural landmarks, the city is also grappling with notable safety concerns. Residents and tourists alike face issues such as theft, assault, and burglaries. Casablanca’s crime issues place it alongside other African cities with high crime rates, reflecting broader challenges across the continent. The situation underscores the need for better safety measures to protect both locals and visitors in African cities.
