The President, Bola Tinubu recently withdrew the nomination of Dr Mariam Shetty, a nominee from Kano State.
He replaced Shetty with Mariya Mahmoud and nominated former spokesperson for the Bola Tinubu presidential campaign council, Festus Keyamo.
Recall that the ministerial nomination of Maryam Shetty from Kano State had generated mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, particularly, Twitter.
Who is Shetty?
Maryam Shettima, popularly known as Mariam Shetty is a national leader of the APC support group. She graduated from Bayero University, Kano, with a distinction in BSc Physiotherapy. She also has an MSc in Sports Physiotherapy from the University of East London.
Newsmen report that while some Nigerians praised President Tinubu for nominating Shetty, others criticised the president for nominating her.
A Twitter user said Nigeria is a country where connections can make Dr Maryam Shetty a minister. Another user kicked Tinubu saying, “But for some reason, PBAT picked Maryam Shetty with no known achievements over Kwankwaso who both the poor and average Nigerians adore.”
How did the replacement happen?
Reports say, Maryam Shetty, who was listed for screening by the Senate today, got the shock of her life when she was informed of her replacement at the National Assembly complex.
According to the Senate’s Order Paper for Friday, 4th of August 2023, Shetty was listed as nominee number 12 to be attended to by the Senators. She had arrived at the parliament building at about 10.40 am for the screening exercise brimming with smiles while exchanging pleasantries with those that came her way.
She however went dumbfounded when the news of her replacement broke out via another communication sent to the Senate by President Tinubu on Friday morning.
Reacting to the news on Twitter, Shetty wrote, “I was just informed now at today’s plenary session that President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has withdrawn my ministerial nomination and replaced me with Dr Mariya Mahmoud. I’m grateful and thankful for any decision from you My President!”
