Heavy rains swept across Hyderabad on Thursday afternoon, providing a respite from the sweltering heat. However, the downpour also resulted in flooding in several areas of the city. The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) reported that the highest recorded rainfall was over 51 mm as of 4 p.m.
Yousfuguda recorded the highest rainfall of 51.3 mm, followed by 48 mm at the Centre for Economic and Social Studies, 44.3 mm at Adarsh Nagar, 42.8 mm at Srinagar Colony, 42.5 mm in Balanagar, 42.3 mm at Banjara Hills, 40.8 mm at Gachibowli, 40.5 mm at Neredmet, 34.3 mm at Gajularamaram, 38 mm at Telecom Colony, 37.3 mm in Gajwel, and 36.8 mm in Jeedimetla.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers, with occasional intense spells and gusty winds for Thursday evening and night in various zones of Hyderabad, including Charminar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad, and Serilingampally. This has raised concerns among Hyderabadis about the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal scheduled for this evening.
The IMD issued a rain warning at 2 p.m. for Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Rangareddy districts, advising people to monitor the weather and be prepared to move to safer locations if conditions deteriorate. At 4 p.m., an alert for moderate rain and thundershowers was issued for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
The Director of Enforcement, Vigilance, and Disaster Management of GHMC shared a weather update on X, urging citizens to remain vigilant. Rainfall has been reported in various parts of Hyderabad, including Miyapur, Nizampet, JNTU, Kukatpally, KPHB, Moosapet, Erragadda, SR Nagar, Borabanda, Motinagar, Madhapur, and Jubilee Hills. Light showers have also been observed in Khairatabad, Nampally, Mehdipatnam, Banjara Hills, Panjagutta, Koti, Malakpet, Dilsukhnagar, and LB Nagar.
Rain with strong winds has affected areas like Jeedimetla and Secunderabad, while heavy rain has been reported in Jagadgirigutta, Balanagar, Medchal, and Keesara. Hailstones have been reported in some places, with areas like Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, and Alwal experiencing heavy rain and strong winds. The meteorological department has cautioned that cumulonimbus clouds have formed over the city, indicating a likelihood of heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Drivers are urged to exercise caution to avoid accidents.
The meteorological department has predicted that rains will continue in Telangana for the next three days, with light showers already reported in Karimnagar and Siddipet. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the rainy season.
