IGP mandates vehicular restriction on election day in 26 states

Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector General of Police (IGP) has directed a restriction of vehicular movement from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024, in 26 states holding run-off and bye-elections.

The decision, aimed at maintaining security, excludes essential services such as Independent National Election Commission (INEC) officials, accredited media, and emergency responders, as outlined in a statement released by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The IGP has taken a firm stance against potential interference, banning security aides to VIPs from polling booths and state-owned security outfits from election security management.

In a commitment to a secure electoral process, the IGP emphasizes responsible conduct and warns of legal consequences for disruptions.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to specified authorities, with contact numbers provided: 08034040439 (CP Elections); 08031230631 (Toll-Free); 08057000001, 08057000002

Addressing the recent tragic incidents in Ekiti State, Egbetokun has strongly condemned the killings of two traditional rulers and the abduction of school pupils and teachers.

Immediate measures have been taken to tackle the security challenges, with the deployment of Abiodun Asabi, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) to Zone 17 in Akure.

Asabi will coordinate a comprehensive security response to bring an end to the unfortunate incidents in Ekiti and parts of Ondo State.

Thirteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents, and the IGP assures the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring justice and preventing a recurrence.

He urged citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as efforts are underway to restore peace and security in the affected areas.
