Inside Mozambique’s $80 Billion Energy Transition Plan

Mozambique’s entry into the LPG market in 2022

In 2022, Mozambique embarked on a significant venture into the global energy landscape by entering the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market. This milestone is a critical element of its broader $80 billion energy transition plan aimed at fostering sustainable development. Leveraging its considerable natural gas reserves, Mozambique intends to utilize LPG as a cleaner energy alternative, diversifying its energy sources and reinforcing its position in the international energy sector. The incorporation of LPG is aligned with the country’s goals of economic growth and poverty reduction, marking a strategic move towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The energy transition plan is projected to span until 2050

The energy transition plan in Mozambique, projected to span until 2050, approved by Mozambique’s Council of Ministers on November 21 outlines a series of initiatives set to unfold between 2023 and 2030.  President Filipe Nyusi is expected to present this ambitious energy strategy to the international community at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai on December 2nd.

This ambitious plan encompasses a comprehensive approach to enhance renewable energy capabilities and expand electricity access across Mozambique. A significant increase in hydropower capacity, the expansion of the national electricity grid, and a transition to electric vehicles are among the key strategies outlined. 

How the plan will expand hydropower capacity by 2,000 megawatts

A cornerstone of this plan is the expansion of hydropower capacity by 2,000 megawatts. This increase will be achieved through the upgrade of existing facilities and the completion of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project. This move not only underscores Mozambique’s commitment to renewable energy but also sets a precedent for hydropower use in Africa.

In addition to hydropower, the strategy emphasizes the expansion of the national electricity grid, a critical step in democratizing electricity access. This expansion is especially vital for rural and underserved areas, potentially unlocking new economic opportunities and improving quality of life.

Another significant aspect of the plan is the transition to electric vehicles. This shift aims to reduce emissions in the transportation sector, aligning with global trends toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.

The energy transition plan is a vehicle for Societal transformation

The implementation of this energy transition plan aligns with Mozambique’s broader objectives of driving development and lifting millions from poverty. Pedro Simao, special advisor to the minister of energy, indicated that the plan is still being fine-tuned, with a public release expected shortly.
