As you’re recovering from ringing in 2024 on Monday, Jan. 1, keep in mind that many offices and services will be shut down — including U.S. financial markets.
So if you’re wondering what’s open and what’s closed for New Year’s Day, then here’s a rundown of what you can expect.
Is the stock market open on New Year’s Day?
U.S. stock exchanges, and other financial markets around much of the world, will be closed Monday for the New Year’s Day holiday. What’s more, fixed-income traders get a jump on the New Year festivities, with industry group Sifma recommending U.S. bond markets close an hour early Friday at 2 p.m. Eastern.
Investors will kick off 2024 on Tuesday with full trading sessions. Bulls will attempt to build on Wall Street’s positive end-of-2023 momentum. The Dow Jones Industrial Average

has scored seven record closes in December, including Thursday, Dec. 28, while the S&P 500

came into the final session of the year just 0.3% shy of its record close of 4,796.56 set on Jan. 3, 2022. The S&P 500 has surged more than 24% in 2023, bouncing back from a 2022 rout sparked as the Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate-hike campaign sent bond yields soaring.
Will USPS, FedEx and UPS still deliver?
The United States Postal Service will not be delivering mail, and local post offices will also be closed on New Year’s Day. Priority Express Mail, however, will still be delivered.

Is Costco open on New Year’s Day?
A select number of big-box retailers and grocery stores are closed, including Costco

Will banks be closed for New Year’s?
Most banks will indeed be closed, but you can always visit an ATM or use your bank’s app for many services.
What government offices are open for New Year’s Day?
All nonessential federal offices are closed, and the same generally applies to state government offices. Government-run national parks are also usually closed.
Schools
Public and private schools aren’t typically open on Jan. 1, as the holiday is part of the longer winter break.
