Jos Buttler, England’s T20 captain and one of world’s best batsmen in the shorter format of the game, could be offered a long-term contract worth millions of pounds each year from his IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, the Telegraph reported. The exact value of the contract and whether Jos Buttler plans to accept the deal was not confirmed by the report.
Jos Buttler has been with Rajasthan Royals since 2018 and has played a big part in the Indian Premier League franchise’s performance through the years. In this season’s IPL, he scored 392 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 139, the second highest among the Rajasthan Royals batters after YBK Jaiswal.
Buttler won the Orange Cap in IPL 2022 season after scoring 863 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 149.
A top order batsman in T20 format, he has a reputation of dismantling the strongest of bowling attacks with ease.
According to Rajasthan Royals website, Jos Buttler has played scored more than 3000 runs in 92 IPL matches at a strike rate of 148.32.
News reports said that IPL franchises are looking to sign up other key players to longer-term deals. The Daily Mail had in May reported that England’s Jofra Archer could be offered a multi-year contract by Mumbai Indians.
In South Africa’s SA20 league, Butler plays for Paarl Royals, a team owned by Royals Sports Group. This is the third cricket franchise from the Royals Sports Group, after Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and Barbados Royals in the CPL.
News reports say that it remains to be seen whether players can hold a multi-year contract on the franchise circuit as well as an England central contract. And the England board is exploring ways to have more control over their players, including by offering multi-year central contracts and raising match fees for international formats.
