Protesters have blocked the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos as the state government proceeds with the mass demolition of properties in defiance of a court order. The demolition, which targets structures deemed “illegal” or lacking permits, has sparked outrage among residents.
The affected estate, Hopeville Estate in Sangotedo, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, has witnessed the destruction of numerous houses. In response, residents of Jakande Estate have barricaded the access road, leading to a standoff with security forces, including anti-riot police deployed to aid in the demolitions.
According to reports, a task force from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA), accompanied by security personnel, used bulldozers and heavy machinery to carry out the demolition, despite the matter being in court. LABSCA claims to have served prior notice, citing non-approval of building plans as justification.
However, residents argue that the notice was inadequate, especially given the pending court case. They express shock and dismay over the sudden destruction of their homes and the lack of proper notification.
Videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the demolition, with buildings reduced to rubble and residents left homeless. The presence of armed policemen in the area has heightened tensions, further exacerbating the situation.
As the demolition continues, residents of Hopeville Estate face an uncertain future, grappling with the task of rebuilding their lives amidst the chaos and confusion.
