Lawmakers Push for Six-Year Presidential Term with Regional Rotation

A group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives is pushing for changes to the 1999 Constitution to rotate the Presidency among Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

They also want to amend the Constitution to allow for a single six-year term for the President and Governors.

Speaking on behalf of the group in Abuja, Ikenga Ugochinyere, the representative for Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency in Imo State, highlighted the benefits of these changes.

“Reducing government spending and waste, increasing efficiency in governance, and ensuring national stability by providing a single six-year term for the President and Governors,” he said, “will greatly help in cost-cutting measures.”

The proposed rotation of the Presidency aims to promote fairness and unity among the different regions of Nigeria.

By allowing each geo-political zone to lead, the lawmakers believe it will foster a sense of inclusion and reduce regional tensions.

The single six-year term proposal seeks to address the inefficiencies and excessive costs associated with multiple-term administrations.

According to Ugochinyere, limiting the President and Governors to one term will minimize the expenses related to elections and political campaigns.

It will also encourage leaders to focus on long-term goals and avoid the distractions of re-election campaigns.

Supporters of these amendments argue that the current system, which allows for two four-year terms, often leads to wasteful spending and a lack of continuity in policies.

They believe that a six-year term will provide enough time for meaningful projects and policies to be implemented and completed.

The proposed changes have sparked a debate among lawmakers and the public.

Some believe that rotating the Presidency and limiting terms will improve governance and national unity, while others are concerned about the potential drawbacks.

The group of lawmakers is determined to push forward with their proposals, hoping to gather enough support to amend the Constitution.
