Lizzo says ‘I quit’ following performance at Biden campaign event

The 35-year-old artist said in an Instagram post on Friday evening that she will “quit.” Lizzo did not specify what she was quitting but said she’s tired of being “dragged” online.

“All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it,” Lizzo wrote.

She continued: “I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout and view … being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look … my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name. I didn’t sign up for this shit — I quit.”

In the comments, celebrities like Paris Hilton and rapper Killer Mike shared words of encouragement.

“We love you Queen,” Hilton wrote.

Lizzo did not specify what “lies” or “jokes” led to her statement.

The singer has faced a wave of criticism and fatphobia following her decision to perform at a reelection campaign event for President Joe Biden on Thursday.

Some questioned her decision to perform at the Biden event, considering his support of Israel amid its war in Gaza.

“Really disappointed in your stance promoting genocide,” one commenter wrote on Instagram.

Conversely, conservative commentators shamed the Biden campaign for choosing the artist to perform amid allegations of body-shaming and sexual harassment made against her by her backup dancers in a lawsuit filed last August.

Lizzo previously called these claims “outrageous” and “false.”

Lizzo has also faced fatphobic comments and has spoken out about how they affected her following the release of her song “Rumors” in 2021.

“People saying shit about me that just doesn’t even make sense. It’s fat-phobic, and it’s racist and it’s hurtful,” the singer said in 2021. “If you don’t like my music, cool. If you don’t like ‘Rumors’ the song, cool. But a lot of people don’t like me because of the way I look.

Representatives for Lizzo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
