In a striking critique, Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has vehemently criticized the Federal Government (FG) for its “insensitive” and extravagant participation in the recent Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates.
Abure’s remarks, delivered while receiving an award from the Benin chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, underscored a growing controversy over the size of the Nigerian delegation to the event.
Recently, the FG faced public backlash after it was revealed that an unprecedented delegation of 1,411 individuals represented Nigeria at COP28. In defense, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, clarified that the government-funded only 422 of these participants. However, this clarification did little to quell the criticism.
Abure directly linked this issue to the leadership style of President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that the current administration is repeating the mistakes of its predecessors.
In a country grappling with poverty, where even the current minimum wage is a subject of debate, Abure argued that such a large delegation to COP28 represents a wasteful jamboree, far removed from the realities of ordinary Nigerians.
Highlighting Nigeria’s economic challenges, including borrowing for wages, widespread insecurity, power collapse, and a dwindling investor base, Abure questioned the rationale behind spending substantial resources on such a large delegation.
He contrasted Nigeria’s approach with wealthier nations, which sent significantly smaller teams to the same conference, labeling the FG’s actions as a display of “insensitivity and brazen impunity.”
