McLaren is combining its London and South of England businesses in a new national headquarters in Canary Wharf.
The company, which turned over £726m in its last financial year, will see 240 staff relocate from offices in Chiswell Street, in the City of London, as well as its historic headquarters at McLaren House in Brentwood, Essex. Its new office will be at 20 Churchill Place in the Isle of Dogs, with staff moving in September.
The new combined division will be led by managing director Darren Gill and will have sector leads for education and hotels (Tony Whyte), commercial work (Dominic Egan), data centres (Tony La Croix), residential and health (Richard Eager) and industrial and logistics jobs (David Gavin).
The company also has a Midlands and North office based in Solihull, with a supplementary office in Cheshire, as well as a UAE business based in Dubai. McLaren’s property and development arm will continue to be based in new offices in Mayfair, west London, which it moved to in January.
The company said its new offices and division had been “designed as a collaborative space”, adding the move responds to an increase in mixed-use work and will “creat[e] a centre of excellence and allow individual colleagues to broaden their experience across a more diverse range of sectors”.
Paul Heather, group managing director at McLaren Construction, said: “Our market has evolved. Repurposing from one use to another is common, single buildings have multiple uses and placemaking in some of our larger projects means the community lives, works and plays in self-contained new neighbourhoods.
“Our people need experience of all the common sectors – their complexities and how they fit together. The London & South region has the scale to offer that experience and to nurture industry-leading expertise.”
Kevin Taylor, chairman of McLaren, said: “I will be pleased to see McLaren colleagues working together day in, day out, sharing ideas, experience and specialist knowledge of sectors, geographies and technologies.
“The best way to achieve that is to bring people together in one place and one team. The London & South centre of excellence will complement our Midlands & North division and have the critical mass to support our colleagues in their learning, their career development and their wellbeing.
“The scale and character of this new headquarters reflects McLaren’s growth and transformation.”
Gill said: “The creation of the new London & South business is an exciting opportunity for us to grow a sustainable and profitable business, blending the skills of people from across McLaren. I look forward to leading the new team into the future.”
McLaren said its “improved working environment” will be complemented by improved human resources policies such as boosted maternity and paternity pay, as well as policies around adoption, surrogacy and carers’ leave.
