Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, during a ministerial sectoral update in Abuja, said the Federal Government of Nigeria is not aware Dangote Refinery has begun importing its crude oil from the United States.
This disclosure came straight from the event, marking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first year in office, which was rife with discussions that hinted at a significant gap in the government’s oversight of the oil sector.
Speaking at the event, attended by key figures including the Ministers of Budget and National Planning, FCT, Youth Development, and others, Lokpobiri expressed his surprise over the Dangote Refinery’s choice to source crude oil from abroad. “I’m not aware that Dangote Refinery has started importing crude oil from the US.
This revelation is why we are pushing for an increase in local production,” he stated. The minister emphasized the government’s intent to ramp up drilling operations to boost domestic oil production, which would support not only Dangote but other refineries nationwide.
The Subsidy Confusion
Another significant topic at the briefing was the ongoing debate about fuel subsidies. Despite rumors to the contrary, Lokpobiri reiterated the administration’s stance that fuel subsidies had been eliminated, aligning with President Tinubu’s policy from his first day in office.
“And I can confirm to you today that the subsidy is gone,” Lokpobiri declared, clarifying that while direct fuel subsidies are no longer in place, the government continues to explore other ways to support its citizens, potentially through subsidies in areas like food security.
